When John Hunter died his museum was cared for by his faithful assistant and amanuensis, the artist and anatomist, William Clift, who persuaded the Government to purchase it. Richard Owen, Clift's son-in-law, later became curator, and his monumental catalogue is of special value as a complete record of this part of John Hunter's collection, especially since the majority of it was destroyed in World War II.
