The annotated bibliography presented on this website was inspired by Sir William Osler, initiated by Fielding Garrison in 1912 and 1933, and developed in multiple print editions by Leslie Morton from 1943 to 1983. Displaying citations by subject, author, or keyword, the bibliography provides annotated chronological lists of significant works on the full range of medical and biological literature.

Having used the bibliography extensively since the 1960s, I took over the project in 1989 and published a revised and expanded fifth printed edition in 1991. Rather than continuing it as an expensive printed book, after the copyright reverted to me, I had the bibliography converted into a free online database.

From that point forward, following my own judgment and advice from others, I revised and rebuilt the indexes, and expanded the bibliography much more significantly.

Thirty-seven years after my work on the bibliography began, I am pleased to pass ownership and editorial control of the Garrison-Morton-Norman bibliography to the new Institute for the International History of Medicine, where it will continue to be revised and updated and will remain a free international resource for study of the printed and digital literature on the history of medicine.
